AWS Class ER316/316H MIG and TIG filler wire and rod is a specialized stainless steel welding consumable crafted for both MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) processes. It’s perfect for welding austenitic stainless steels like Grades 316, 316L, and 316H. The “H” variant stands out with a slightly higher carbon content (around 0.04–0.08%), which boosts its tensile and creep strength at higher temperatures, all while keeping its impressive corrosion resistance thanks to the molybdenum it contains.
When it comes to typical weld metal composition, you can expect carbon levels of 0.04–0.08% for the H variant, along with chromium at 18–20%, nickel at 11–14%, molybdenum at 2–3%, manganese at 1–2.5%, and silicon at 0.3–0.65%. In terms of mechanical properties, it boasts a tensile strength of about 608 MPa and an elongation of roughly 35–40%, ensuring that the welds are not only durable but also resistant to corrosion.
