The AWS Class E316/316H‑16 electrodes are a type of austenitic stainless steel stick welding rods, specifically crafted for applications that need to resist corrosion and perform well at high temperatures. They work great for welding stainless steel alloys like Type 316, 316L, and 316H, thanks to their molybdenum content, which boosts their resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
When it comes to the typical composition of the weld metal, you’ll find carbon levels up to 0.04% for E316L and up to 0.08% for E316H, along with chromium at 17–20%, nickel at 11–14%, and molybdenum at 2–3%. These electrodes boast impressive mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of about 520 MPa and an elongation of around 30%, ensuring that the welds are not only strong but also durable and resistant to corrosion.
